Introduction
Through the technologies
of the 21st century, the good news of God's redemption for mankind from sin is
being presented to ever increasing numbers of people. It seems, however,
that a great need exists for a practical, systematic plan to teach the basic,
foundational truths of the Christian faith to those who are trusting Jesus
Christ for forgiveness of their sins. Some 20 years ago while pastorin g a church, the inspiration for the Adopt-A-Lamb
series came to me as I sought to simplify the process by which new converts
matured. Since the commandment to make disciples is given to all
believers, I tried to find a way to involve the whole church in the growth of
these new additions to the Church.
It was decided that if we could involve the older members of our church
in the growth process of the younger believers that there would be many
benefits. Since the process would take about 20 weeks, the new lambs
would not only have a grasp of the basics when they finished, they would go
through the process with a mentor who would probably become their friend.
We were convinced that this older brother or sister relationship would be a
stabilizing force in the younger lambs' lives.
After identifying 20 basic principles of Christianity, we began to train
the older members of the Church so they could, in turn, teach others. As
the process began to unfold, we soon discovered an unexpected benefit. We
found that, as the mentors began preparing to teach others, they were stirred
to new levels of personal spiritual commitment. So often, the foundation
principles that brought us life in the beginning of our own faith are
neglected. The preparation that required the mentors to revisit these
truths also brought back the life of a renewed faith.
Our hope is that, after you finish studying and embracing the basics of
the Christian faith that are assembled in this book, you will find a young
Christian and invest the time to pass on the torch of faith to him or
her. We are convinced that once you find the joy of giving your faith to
